Fed: PM to visit Solomon Islands today
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD flies to the Solomon Islands today for a quick visit tothank the Australian-led intervention force working to restore law and order there.
Mr HOWARD also plans to hold talks with Solomons Prime Minister Sir ALLAN KEMAKEZAduring his five-hour visit.
The Australian warship HMAS Manoora will dock in the capital Honiara to put on morningtea for Mr HOWARD.
He's the first Australian prime minister to visit the Solomons in more than a decade.
The Manoora forms part of the 1,900-strong military contingent supporting about 200police restoring peace in the troubled Pacific islands after five years of ethnic fighting.
Mr HOWARD says he hopes the military force can be reduced before too long, but thepolice presence will be long-term.
