NSW: Police inquiry underway after officer shoots man
SYDNEY, April 13 AAP - A police officer shot and wounded a man in the stomach tonightafter he allegedly tried to stab a female constable, police said.
A statement later issued by police said the shooting followed an alleged attempt touse a 30cm knife to stab a female constable in a park in western Sydney.
The incident occurred just before 6pm after police responded to an emergency call forassistance following reports of an earlier attempted stabbing.
The statement said officers arrived at a reserve in George Street, Parramatta, andsaw a man sitting on a bench.
It said that as the man became increasingly aggressive, two officers backed towardsa fence and attempted to use capsicum spray to defend themselves.
The police statement alleges the man then lunged at a female officer with a knife,at which point her partner opened fire.
The pair then tried to give first aid before the arrival of an ambulance, it said.
A 30-year-old Harris Park man has since been operated on at Westmead Hospital, wherehis condition remains critical.
An inquiry into the incident was underway, police said.
