VIC: Record prices for petrol at Melbourne service stations
Victoria's peak motoring body says some Melbourne service stations are pricing their super
petrol at more than 80 cents a litre in only the second time ever and the first since the 1991
Gulf War.
And there's little relief in sight for Melbourne's frustrated motorists, with experts
predicting high prices until at least October.
The price increases have been dramatic: up from about 68 cents a litre for unleaded petrol
in March to anywhere from 71 cents to almost 79 cents today.
Royal Automobile Club of Victoria corporate relations manager DAVID CUMMING says he's
received several reports of unleaded petrol around Melbourne at 78.9 cents a litre, and
super-grade petrol at 2.3 cents higher.
Mr CUMMING says the sharp price increase has been forced by a doubling in the price of
crude oil over recent months.
Mobil Australia's external affairs manager SAMANTHA POTTS confirms super prices have risen
above 80 cents.
